Hypoglycemia, otherwise known as low blood glucose, is when blood sugar falls below normal levels

In a person with diabetes, blood glucose can fluctuate more than normal because of inadequate insulin production.

Different levels of Hypoglycemia

1. Hypoglycemia alert value (≤70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L)): Sufficiently low for treatment with fast-acting carbohydrate and dose adjustment of glucose-lowering therapy

2. Clinically significant hypoglycemia (<54 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L)): Sufficiently low to indicate serious, clinically important hypoglycemia

3. Severe hypoglycemia (no specific glucose threshold): Hypoglycemia associated with severe cognitive impairment requiring external assistance for recovery
